Everyone loves a winner
An eclectic mix of materials and a touch of whimsy helped this kitchen win the People's Choice Award in the Trends Kitchen Design Awards

Thinking outside the box can be just what's needed for a new kitchen. And, as this project illustrates, it can also be just what's needed to win the People's Choice Award in the inaugural Trends Kitchen Design Awards.
Designer Kirsti Wolfe of Kirsti Wolfe Designs in Bend, OR, designed the kitchen for a couple who wanted a fun, functional kitchen where they could entertain their friends and family.
Wolfe says two waterfalls inside the house, one near the kitchen, inspired the cascading wood veneer pattern on the doors concealing the refrigerators. A dark pattern in quartered makore wood is contrasted by quartered anigre light veneers on either side.

These two materials appear throughout the kitchen, with the darker veneer framing cabinets and corner units, and the lighter anigre veneer fronting doors and drawers.
The kitchen also features a circular mesquite wood countertop, which accentuates a semi-circular, glass-fronted display cabinet. Other countertops feature slabs of Suelo Marinao Labradorite granite.
Functionality has not been compromised, however. Two large parallel islands create multiple work and dining stations. There are also two Wolf 30in ovens and two Miele dishwashers to help make entertaining a breeze.
