When it comes to leading design trends, most of the latest looks come from Europe. This is particularly true of lighting, which, over the past decade has become an important interior-design element.

Following his recent visit to a major lighting fair in Germany, Dean Fulford, general manager of Lighting Direct, says the dominant direction is simple, square forms that suit virtually any decor.

Two of Lighting Direct's new lines are the Yola and the Atlanta Series. Both are designed by Austrian-based company Elgo to reflect this style.

"These two lines are part of a whole new range from Eglo," says Fulford. "In 30 years of business, it's one of the biggest and most exciting ranges we've launched onto the market. The minimalist design and slim, clean lines of the Yola exemplify the cutting-edge products created by Eglo."

The Yola Series features the newly developed 40-watt G9 halogen lamps. Burning more like a bright candle than a linear tube, they provide efficient light output from a small, low wattage bulb. As a result, they can be used in minimalist designs.

A range of different formats enables homeowners to create a consistent aesthetic throughout a room. The six-light, flush-fitted ceiling unit, floor and tables lamps, wall brackets and pendants feature acid-finished glass.

The Atlanta Series, in the living area above, has a border of clear glass with accents of white glass. Its square lines provide a sleek, modernist look that works well with most contemporary interiors.

The halogen lamps used in the Atlanta Series cast a bright, white light that can be dimmed to create an effect similar to candlelight, says Fulford. This makes them a good option for entertaining.
