Equipped for the high life

When a sub-penthouse comes with a spectacular view of Sydney harbour, the bridge and Sydney Opera House, there is a certain expectation that the outlook will be complemented by a high-end interior.

For the kitchen in this sub-penthouse in The Cove apartment building designed by renowned architect, the late Harry Seidler, a degree of extravagance was required, says designer Mary Young.

"I chose to use the luxurious Calacatta Statuario marble for the expansive splashback and generous benchtops," she says.

"These were beautifully fabricated to add drama and a sense of movement to the kitchen, and are complemented by the high-end Smeg Linear range of appliances. The black and white tones of the marble are enhanced by the stainless steel and super silver glass of the appliances, which also provide the high performance required by the owners."

Specifier Robyn Yam specified a Smeg K181V90 90cm rangehood, SA112-8 Linear vapour clean oven, SCA45V2 Linear steam oven, SCA45M2 Linear microwave oven with grill, CTA15-2 warming drawer and SIHP294S 90cm induction cooktop.

"I have been using Smeg appliances myself for many years and have always found them good value," Yam says. "I especially appreciate the benefits of cooking with the Thermoseal system I know its controlled cooking environment will give me consistently good results."

Yam says the sleek look of the Linear range is another advantage.

"This induction cooktop, for example, is very streamlined. Nothing else would have looked as good in this kitchen. This cooktop is also very low in energy usage, and a joy to use pots and pans just slide over the surface."

Other benefits of the Smeg induction cooktop include four generously sized cooking zones and instant pan-size recognition. The cooking zones will also stop automatically if there is spillage.

The Smeg Linear vapour clean oven in super silver glass and stainless steel has a large 79-litre gross capacity.
