When a sub-penthouse comes with a spectacular harbour and city view, there is a certain expectation that the outlook will be complemented by a high-end interior and appliances to match.

For the kitchen in this sub-penthouse in The Cove apartment building designed by renowned architect, the late Harry Seidler, a degree of extravagance was required, says designer Mary Young.

"I chose to use the luxurious Calacatta Statuario marble for the expansive splashback and generous benchtops," she says.

"The marble is complemented by the high-end Smeg Linea range of appliances. The black and white tones of the marble are enhanced by the stainless steel and super silver glass of the appliances, which also provide the high performance required by the owners."

Specifier Robyn Yam specified a Smeg K181V90BL 90cm rangehood, SA112-8 Linea vapour clean oven, SC45V2 Linea steam oven, SC45M2 Linea microwave oven with grill, CT15-2 warming drawer and SI3950B 90cm induction cooktop.

Yam says the sleek look of the Linea appliances is a distinct advantage they are characterised by light, uniform lines, visual balance and good ergonomics.

"This induction cooktop, for example, is very streamlined. Nothing else would have looked as good in this kitchen. This cooktop is also very low in energy usage, and a joy to use pots and pans just slide over the surface."

Other benefits of the Smeg induction cooktop include four generously sized cooking zones and instant pan-size recognition. The cooking zones will also stop automatically if there is spillage.

"I have been using Smeg appliances myself for many years and have always found them good value," Yam says. "I especially appreciate the benefits of cooking with the Thermoseal system I know its controlled cooking environment will give me consistently good results."

The Smeg Linea vapour clean oven in super silver glass and stainless steel has a large 72-litre gross capacity. In addition to the Thermoseal system, which ensures accurate temperatures, the oven features intuitive Smart Chef technology and comes with 10 cooking functions, ever-clean enamel and cool door technology.

The co-ordinating microwave and steam oven provide additional cooking options, helping to ensure this home is well equipped for entertaining.
