Enlightened perspective
Aluminium and fixed timber louvres played an important part in the Meridian building's aesthetic, these were supplied and installed by Thermosash
In a world increasingly conscious of energy demands placed on the planet, architectural elements that harness the natural resource of the sun have become integral to the look of a modern building. The Meridian building provides an excellent example of this.
Thermosash Commercial designed, manufactured and installed several exterior elements that make the building comfortable for staff and add to the fundamental design aesthetic, says director David Rooker.
"The fully integrated design solution is based on a unitised curtain wall, creating twin facades, and fully operable external louvres in anodised aluminium and timber," says Rooker. "Effectively, the entire exterior look is dictated by these elements, apart from the concrete pre-cast face on the south elevation."
One challenge for Thermosash Commercial was to incorporate maintenance walkways within the twin facades. As with all other elements, these are supported by the unitised curtain wall.
"The louvres operate automatically, making maximum use of solar penetration when required, while self-adjusting to provide shade when temperatures are excessively warm," says Rooker. "They can be adjusted to suit differing sun elevations as the seasons turn."
Thermosash systems are floor-to-floor height panel units designed to allow for building movement and differential rates of thermal expansion and contraction.
