Endless summer
Despite a steep site, this back garden was transformed into an inviting poolscape, courtesy of Mayfair Pools
If you've always considered flat land to be a prerequisite for a swimming pool, it may be time to think again. Thanks to the skills of designers and engineers, pools today are frequently installed on so-called difficult' sites transforming the landscape in the process.
This project from Mayfair Pools is a good example. Director Richard Rowley says the land was reasonably steep and quite unusable.
"The aim was to give the clients a back yard entertainment and lifestyle area," he says. "Because it was nearly impossible to remove excavated material from the site, the pool was elevated and a retaining wall built on the far side. The small amount of material that was excavated was used to create a level garden on the other side of the wall."
Rowley says the project has resulted in a complete transformation of the back yard. The pool complex, which is illuminated at night, includes a large paved area for casual entertaining and an open fireplace. A sheer descent waterfall provides a novel water feature at one end.
Mayfair Pools specialises in the construction of custom fibreglass pools designed to suit the site and the client's preferences. The company has agents throughout the country who can help with design or provide referrals to professional landscape architects.
