Empire of shifting sands
With one of the largest sand deserts in the world as its inspiriation, the UAE pavilion harnesses the forces of nature and technology
The landscape and climate of the UAE are integral to Emirati culture. Like a sand dune, the UAE pavilion appears smooth on the side that bears the full force of the wind and rough and textured on the other.
"The UAE has one of the largest sand deserts in the world it is intrinsic to the identity of each of the emirates," says Gerard Evenden, Foster + Partners senior partner. "The Dunes, as the building is known, continues that association. Its structure is a triangulated lattice of flat stainless steel panels, joined by adjustable nodes, which are designed to enable the pavilion to be demounted on site and constructed quickly and economically. Following the expo, the pavilion will be relocated to a permanent site in the UAE, making it a truly recyclable structure."

Treated to appear golden, the facade presents a shimmering, ever-changing appearance reminding visitors of the inspiring beauty of natural sand dunes. The UAE pavilion at Shanghai World Expo 2010, is inspired by nature, employing the latest technology in construction and operation, says Evenden.
"The cities of the UAE rise from the desert and the pavilion similarly emerges to form a natural counterpoint to Shanghai's urban landscape. Like a sand dune, it is oriented to the direction of the wind and is a powerful example of an organic and highly effective passive environmental design."
