Keeping clean
A necessary feature of any car workshop is the use and disposal of products such as waste oils, coolants and dirty water.
Eclipse Environmental Australia won the contract as the specialist workshop consultant on the design team of the new Audi Centre in Sydney. For this project, the company supplied and installed bulk oil tanks and reticulation systems, as well as systems for waste fluid extraction, compressed air and nitrogen for tyre inflation, rain water filtration and reuse integration, waste water treatment and recycling, vehicle lifting and hoisting, and remote controlled tail pipe exhaust extraction.
Director Richard Laferia says all these systems had to be integrated into the multi-level building, while maintaining high levels of efficiency and ergonomics for the service technicians.
"Our objective was to use the best possible equipment and systems for overall longevity and low downtime, and to maximise opportunities to reclaim, recycle or reuse resources and waste streams as appropriate. In addition, we needed to be able to service these systems," he says.
Because the vehicle service facility is on the fifth level of the building, Eclipse had to provide a design that integrated the systems vertically to allow water, oil, and air to be drawn from and returned to storage tanks in the basement. Symphonic drainage provided the most energy-efficient method of achieving this.
"Once all the systems were installed, we trained the operators, and we now maintain and certify all workshop equipment and remove waste products from washbays out of hours to reduce the burden on Audi service staff," says Laferia.
