Nothing says luxury in a bathroom more than materials that are sleek and polished

Natural materials are one of the most important tactile elements that can enhance the design of a bathroom. This is an area of the home where people expect the surfaces to have a sensual touch.

One of two guest suites in a 9000sq ft, two-level penthouse apartment enjoying commanding city views, this bathroom uses natural stone and wood to add warmth and create a relaxed ambiance.

Designer KC Miller of Miller/Montana & Associates used the same cream-colored walls and limestone floors teamed with dark, wenge wood found in the rest of the home. Brushed stainless steel also features prominently throughout.

Granite with a cat's-eye glint was chosen for the vanity top, bath surround and shower base. This material was selected both for its hard-wearing qualities and to mirror the effect of the glittering city lights in the view.

A one-inch mosaic tile lines the shower and is banded along the wall, across the top of the vanity and bath surround, tying together the design.

Miller balanced the strong linear lines of the custom-designed wenge and stainless steel vanity with twin circular basins. These are brushed stainless steel and sit on top of the vanity.

Separate mirrors hang above each basin. These are framed by pieces of wenge at the top and bottom, with the top pieces two inches thicker to tilt the mirrors forward.

Miller favored a sleek look with this design. He custom designed the cabinetry to ensure there was plenty of storage to keep surfaces clean and tidy, and free of clutter.

The trash receptacle is concealed within one of the large stainless steel drawers. The other drawer is used for dirty linen.

"I like everything to have its place and be hidden away," Miller says.
