The key ingredients in a well-planned kitchen are a smooth flow between zones, plenty of easily accessed storage space, and a minimal requirement for lifting and movement.

When Peter Wichgers of Danish Kitchens was asked to plan, manufacture and install a new kitchen for the owners of this home, he applied his principles of dynamic space to the design.

This was the second kitchen the company had designed for these customers, so they knew his principles produced a good-looking and highly workable result.

"A new kitchen should look good and be functional," says the designer. "Zone planning ensures good work flows, and correctly organised kitchen zones result in shorter journeys around the space and minimal lifting. Full access into drawers and cupboards is another key feature."

When the owners bought this home, the kitchen was cut off from the family living spaces, the pool and outdoor entertaining areas. They wanted this problem corrected, so Danish Kitchens arranged with the customer for a builder to remove a wall that separated the family spaces.

The kitchen now flows through to the family living area and out to the pool. Replacing the old wall is an island, which is large to suit the proportions of the new space. It includes bar seating, a wine refrigerator and plenty of drawers for storage.

To create the modern style the owners wanted for their kitchen, the cabinetry is finished in a white, two-pack satin lacquer, with off-white granite benchtops. The island has stainless steel legs, framework and drawer handles. Stainless steel appliances and white glass splashbacks complete the look.

Danish Kitchens believes in the importance of working closely with its customers, builders, interior designers and architects, to ensure every project is completed to the highest possible standard.
