Of all the mechanical systems in a commercial space, it's probably the air conditioning that causes the most disagreement. The problem is often caused by uneven air distribution.

DuctSox® Systems, distributed by Smooth-Air Products, is a fabric ducting that provides a cost-effective solution. Air is dispersed through a combination of porous fabrics and engineered orifices. The ducting also incorporates a fabric damper system, creating a consistent static regain along the length of the duct, through T junctions and bends, says Vince Atkinson, Smooth-Air national sales and marketing manager.

"Air pressure remains constant, so the ducting won't flap or vibrate due to changing air pressure, and air delivery is quiet. DuctSox also provides other benefits, including ease of installation. It can be installed in about 10% of the time involved in installing conventional metal ducting."

Atkinson says the light weight of the ducting means lighter roof loads, easier handling, and a reduced need for power lifting equipment. Transportation is also easier and cost effective.

DuctSox is available in many different product lines, with each line designed to suit different situations. There are a number of colour options, including custom colours and screenprinting. Several different flow patterns are also available, and two of the lines are manufactured from up to 55% recycled materials.

The ducting is 100% custom made for each project, so there is no excess fabric and minimal waste, which is another sustainable design benefit.
