Attention to detail, good communication and teamwork are essential if a development is to run smoothly and be completed successfully.

Dominion Constructors, which has a longstanding relationship with the Giltrap Group, was commissioned as the main contractor for the project to demolish its existing showroom and build a replacement, the Giltrap Audi Terminal. Project manager for the new terminal Brendan Lindsey says the company's objective was to work as a team and maintain a close relationship with the client and consultants to ensure the finished building was functional, met the needs of Audi New Zealand, and maintained the design intent for the franchise globally.

Due to the proximity of services and boundaries on all sides of the site and the depth of excavation, a unique construction methodology was used for the basement. This included a double-skin Shotcrete wall with drainage sheet and waterproofing membrane between. Dominion held weekly meetings with the client and consultants to expedite the resolution of urgent issues. Subcontractors were invited to provide expertise in their specialist fields. "These meetings were critical to maintaining the flow of information to the site," says Lindsey.

A curved glass-reinforced concrete wall in the showroom represents a velodrome Audi first made its mark in motor sport. As a major feature, it was a challenge to build, particularly with the unforgiving light in the showroom. By prefabricating the walls, the end result was more accurate and to a higher standard than if built in situ.
