Double vision
Twin islands in this new kitchen by Celia Visser Design allow views in two directions
It makes sense to position a kitchen bench to maximise the best view. But the spectacular 180° views from the open-plan living area in this new country home meant it was a case of six of one, half a dozen of the other.
Kitchen designer Celia Visser CKDNZ DINZ of Celia Visser Design says the solution was to provide matching islands: one for food preparation and cleanup, and one for cooking and serving. These allow views in both directions.
"The space between the islands and a bank of cabinetry on the rear wall forms a highly efficient work triangle that puts everything in easy reach," Visser says. "The position of the islands also helps with the circulation, ensuring the kitchen is free from through traffic."
The cabinetry features Bestwood Ebano veneer, laid with the grain running horizontally. This is teamed with Corian benchtops in Glacier White. LED lighting above the toekicks makes the islands appear to float above the concrete floor.
The vertical cabinets incorporate a crockery pantry and a food pantry with another workstation that includes a bench, sink and combi microwave oven. Other special features include display shelving for an Art Deco china collection.
