The expression "set in stone" is evocative for good reason. As a material, stone implies strength, permanence and formality. Introducing stone tilework and feature stone detailing to a home can be a short cut to giving it a sense of enduring style and workmanship.

Auckland developer Mr Smith created this Italian villa in the heart of Remuera.

"The house is north facing and we thought it appropriate to model the design on an Italian villa," says Smith. "The home has a townhouse appeal for our urban buyers, but it was also important to recreate the classic charm of older households."

The developer looked to natural stone from Original Stone to accent the home's plasterwork.

"The process was very simple, and their staff were very helpful. The stone work evolved from close consultation with Original Stone," he says.

Rox Borough Schist, a schist-style stone walling veneer, was chosen for the home's two prominent water features. Rustic stone, in the form of granite sets, was also used to pave the feature entrance way. These sets are purchased on a mesh backing for ease of installation.

The final touch was to use a wall capping around the garden planters in the same stonet. By using Rox Borough stone in three different applications the developer was able to keep the colour concept simple and defined.

"Another important area was the pool surround," says Smith. "We chose Original Stone's Tuscan® Sandstone here for its warmth and because it is non-slip and hard wearing."

A light terracotta colour was chosen and the sandstone was continued from the pool area around the side of the home.

Sandstone in another colour was also used in the living room for a feature fireplace. An Original Stone fireplace, Tuscan Bianco, in a light antique white colour was selected to complement the formal decor.

The wide range of products at Original Stone, and knowledge and enthusiasm of the company's staff made the process of selecting the right features for the home much easier, Smith says.
