It's always interesting to take a look inside designers' homes. After all, these are the people who are right up with the play when it comes to styling, materials, colour and appliances.

When designers Gavin Atkins and Warren Sonin of The Block fame recently relocated a 120-year-old farmhouse, they had an opportunity to create their perfect kitchen. And while they required a practical kitchen for entertaining, they also wanted the kitchen to suit an open-plan space in full view of the entire living area.

The pair say they designed the kitchen in reverse order to most they chose the kitchen appliances first and then set about designing the rest of the kitchen.

"We fell in love with the aesthetics of Smeg's Linear collection at first sight," says Atkins. "The styling of each appliance is artfully clean and sleek, so we wanted to present them within the kitchen rather like art works in a gallery. We were also familiar with the performance of the brand from previous experience."

Deep timber veneer joinery was selected as the backdrop for the kitchen, with a dramatic 4m-long island bench taking centre stage.

"At a purely practical level we had to choose our appliances carefully," says Atkins. "Neither of us are terrific cooks so we were looking for appliances that would give consistently good results while guiding us through the whole process. Smeg Linear delivered handsomely in this respect. The SAP112-8 pyrolytic oven has Smart Chef technology so will advise on temperature and cooking times, and even recommends the correct shelf position. The coffee machine does a similar thing we simply programme the strength, length and temperature of the coffee we like and it does the rest."

Some of the appliances conceal the messier aspects of a kitchen the 90cm wide Smeg STH903 dishwasher is fully integrated so it looks just like a kitchen cabinet, while the LQVN862-1 stainless steel sink features two sliding black glass work surfaces that completely conceal the double sinks when not in use.

The designers also specified a Smeg microwave/convection/grill oven and a dedicated steam oven. Positioning a gas cooktop next to an induction wok utilised the flexibility the Smeg range offers each home cook has preferences in style and method of cooking and with the Smeg range every option is covered.
