In the past few decades the kitchen has not only evolved, but has also moved. No longer relegated to a closed-off room at the back of the house, the kitchen today is the centre of operations.

The function of the kitchen has also changed a transformation that has been recognised by leading appliance manufacturer Fisher & Paykel. Mark Elmore, head of industrial design, says the kitchen today is not just a place to prepare and serve food. It is also a meeting place, an office, an entertainment zone and a place to engage with children.

"Because every family is different, it makes sense to configure the kitchen to suit the way we work and live. The concept of distributed appliances lets you position each appliance precisely where you need it. For example, you can have a refrigerator drawer beside the prep sink where you prepare vegetables, or a DishDrawer right beside the drinks area.

"This has given kitchen designers a lot more freedom kitchens can now be designed around the way we create."

Elmore says kitchen cabinets are now more like furniture, so we need to make sure appliances integrate seamlessly.
