From slab size to finishes and edging styles, nature's most enduring building material offers diverse options

The saying set in stone' may mean immovable but this doesn't imply any limitation on the design versatility of this solid, natural material. Colour, size and style of stone all play a part in creating a highly individualistic outcome.

This lodge-style residence, by architectural designer Steve Humpherson, makes dramatic use of local Central Otago schist on both the exterior and as a feature fireplace wall in the generously sized living space.

"Here, we have used large-sized schist rock, with flush earth-toned mortar, to emphasise a classic look that's in keeping with the environment and the style of the house," says Humpherson. "However, there are many types and styles of stonework available for varying degrees of traditional, and also for a strikingly modern appearance."

Another aesthetic approach is to combine the large slabs with smaller schist stones set between, with deep raked joints this is called a semi-dry stack. Taking this a step further, interior stone walls are sometimes created with tightly stacked guillotined stone, creating the look of dry stacking where no mortar is visible at all. However, in reality these feature walls are mortared from behind.

"Another effect growing in popularity is the large stone with a liberal use of lime mortar, actually a throwback to times when lime plaster helped waterproof stone-built residences," says Humpherson. "Greys predominate, but greens, orange-brown and brown are other schist options."

As well as schist's tiered effect, other looks include rounded river stones, basalts and limestones, which are often cut into uniform shapes.

Beyond the stone type, mortar and colour, the edging of stonework also plays an important part.

"Styles include a solid stone or hardwood lintel; or soldiers vertical pieces set and edged together can be used," says Humpherson.
