Having to work within a kitchen that is barely functional is frustrating to say the least. Limited space and outmoded facilities are enough to have you reaching for a sledge hammer. Before you do though, consider employing the services of an experienced kitchen designer to help make your kitchen work for you.

The first step is to ensure that your designer is flexible enough in his or her thinking to be able to get your needs and wants from paper to end product, says Andrea White, a designer at Yellowfox.

"Flexibility in design covering all types and styles of kitchen and being able to specifically answer the brief of the client, will ensure they get exactly what they want."

The two kitchens featured on these pages are indicative of what can be achieved when the designer and client are working in sync. Especially if there are any obstacles to overcome such as lack of space.

The owners of the kitchen on this page were looking to update, but had to work within the confines of the existing limited space and a budget.

"By identifying the Cummins' key requirements and work habits, we were able to achieve a practical and great-looking solution," says White.

White says the secret to creating a designer kitchen in a small area is to incorporate a few key design elements, to give a sense of space. In this instance, the benchtop edging provides a horizontal element that instantly attracts the eye and draws it to the far end of the room, creating an increased perspective and a more voluminous feel.

The kitchen shown above was the culmination of an extensive whole-house project in Remuera. The owners, the Butler family, wanted it to be in keeping with the rest of the home, as well as having an enduring quality.

"The resulting kitchen is an eclectic mix of the very contemporary with the best and most classic products available on the market. Space-saving gadgets and accessories such as internal pull-outs and carousel units behind every door, maximise space and increase organisation," says White.

Yellowfox offers a full exterior and interior design service. Strong associations with companies such as Living Edge a furnishings specialist mean if there is anything Yellowfox can't provide, the company is able to refer clients to an industry professional.
