Bathrooms are no longer the last rooms to be considered when remodeling or designing a new home. And with the current trend towards bathrooms that double as luxury retreats from the household, it pays to involve an industry professional right from the start.

The National Kitchen & Bathroom Association (NKBA) was established more than 40 years ago to provide a list of professional designers and manufacturers who can help you achieve the look you want for your bathroom or kitchen. The association was also formed to remove the risk factor when choosing a professional, says director of marketing Bill Schankel.

"The NKBA promotes professionalism among members, monitors standards, and fosters excellence in design, manufacture and installation," he says. "NKBA members are also fully up-to-date on the latest design trends and new products, and also experienced in solving design problems for projects large and small."

This experience is recognized annually in the NKBA Design Competition, which judges projects on a variety of criteria, including visual appeal, creativity, design, presentation, safety and ergonomics.
