Suspended wood ceiling adds drama
Barrel vault ceilings inside the house echo the shape of the roof. Many of the ceilings also feature natural wood that provides a strong visual link with the outdoors.
CMD Door & Trim was contracted to construct all the wood ceilings, including a dramatic floating ceiling in the family room. This ceiling features aspen wood boards, which were milled in Southern Utah. The boards are suspended from hidden wood trusses using a French cleat system, so they appear to float beneath the black upper ceiling.
CMD project manager Adam Bitton says the gaps between the rows were determined by the lighting if the lights were obscured by the beams they would create shadows.
"We used a very minimal truss width to ensure the ceiling would have visual depth," he says.
CMD Door & Trim also constructed all the floating walnut beams throughout the house and other aspen ceilings, which have an overlapping shiplap design to accommodate the barrel vaults. In addition, the company built millwork for one of the guest suites, and the home theater.
