Desert oasis

Designing a house that fits with the landscape while still standing apart from its neighbors may sound like a contradiction in terms. But as this project shows, with the right design and materials it is possible to achieve both objectives.

Designed by Daniel Coletti and constructed by Sun West Custom Homes, the house sits on a promontory close to the mountains in Las Vegas. Carl Martinez, president of construction, says the house features a high desert contemporary architectural style that is in keeping with the landscape.

"The house is defined by large curved roof canopies, which feature distinctive copper fascias, and by numerous Idaho stone columns that are a key feature of both the exterior and interior."

Martinez says the stone provides a strong visual link with the surroundings, and creates continuity between inside and out.

"Sun West specializes in homes where the lines between the indoor and outdoor areas are blurred, leaving one to wonder where a room ends and where the outside begins," he says.

For this project, the pool was designed to be an integral part of the house. Stone columns with copper architectural elements penetrate the water, and there is a water screen feature that simulates diamonds falling from the sky. The resort look is further reinforced by a swim-up bar, a sunken cabana and a formal outdoor dining area.

Designed to maximize the view, the three-level house also features a peninsula breakfast nook that juts out into the pool.

In order to finish the house in time for the Parade of Homes, Sun West Custom Homes completed a two-year project in just one year.
