Defining space

With high ceilings and an open-plan layout, loft rooms exemplify all things urban and contemporary.

This loft-style kitchen was designed by Jenny Harris of Yellowfox. The space is open to the family room, so a main feature of the design is the inclusion of a centre block of Bestwood Recon Veneer Barista cabinetry, which blocks the appliances from view.

"This also neatly demarcates the cooking and refrigeration space from the entertainment island," says Harris. "The room is open to the pool and outdoor entertainment area, so the kitchen also had to fit aesthetically with this."

The milk-and-coffee colour scheme ties in with the exposed ceiling beams and also lends a European look to the space. Contrasting with the veneer elements, the other cabinetry is created from Bestwood Melamine in Feather White.

A study area is incorporated into the kitchen. This can be used while the rest of the family is relaxing in the family room, or accessed for looking up recipes while cooking. A wall-mounted screen means that the bench space is available when the computer is not needed.
