Innovative architecture and interior design can define a project, but such design elements need to be achievable. When the developer of the Crown 3 hotel project looked to fit out the new bathrooms, the company searched the world for products that would meet the architect's specifications only to find the solution was close at hand.

Bob Taylor, manager of Heritage Glass Products, says the company was asked by Baulderstone to quote on the design and installation of glass shower and toilet enclosures for the hotel.

"The design brief called for a reeded pattern glass with a streamlined, linear look and smooth, polished surfaces on both the flat and patterned sides," he says. "The glass panels also needed to provide appropriate levels of obscurity."

Taylor says standard products on offer elsewhere didn't meet all the design requirements. Heritage Glass Products' solution was to use the latest CNC grinding machines to machine and polish the pattern to one face of the glass with dramatic results.

Heritage Glass Products was also able to supply a door handle that could double as a towel rail on both the inside and outside of the shower doors.

"Collaboration between the project design team and the designers in our factory resulted in a project-specific product in .316 stainless steel that meets both the aesthetic and functional requirements," says Taylor.

The Heritage Glass design team also designed a polished stainless steel removable door stop so that the inward-opening doors can be opened outwards in case of emergency. The stop is based on the sliding keyway principle, and can be activated without tools.

Taylor says that overall, the project involved the supply and installation of 1300 doors.
