The stand-out home featured on these pages is truly a one-off, created from the ground up to meet the precise taste of its owners.

The two-storey, four-bedroom architectural home was custom designed and built by the East Auckland/Manakau GJ Gardner franchise, run by owner and manager Steve Bull.

"Most people work from concept plans or take one of our designs and change it to suit their lifestyle and the location," he says. "This Aucklander wanted to start from scratch and design and build a home that is truly unique."

There are many touches that give the home its distinctive charm. The approach to the city home is along a beautiful cobbled walkway, with a large north-facing sun-soaked deck at the back, complete with a generous spa pool.

"This home truly feels like a relaxed urban retreat everything is designed for both style and convenience. Thoughtful touches, such as the retractable awning offering additional shade to the outdoor seating, are seen throughout."

"The home exudes character at every turn. From the moment you walk through the door, you're greeted by an array of warm timber features that sweep across every room," says Bull. "The natural look is particularly prevalent in the kitchen and dining room with the dining table, cabinetry and floor all in amber-hued wood."

Lush, dark-toned carpets provide an elegant flooring contrast in the expansive living room.

One major standout is the 90 degree sliding door, that effectively brings the outdoors in. This practical feature is engineered with internal steel reinforcements above the door to take the weight of the top storey.

The proud homeowner says he wanted a modern, comfortable home with a great outdoor area as he loves to entertain guests and wanted to be able to open the home up for that reason.

"I had a mate design the home and I took his plans to GJ's who have a strong reputation for building quality homes. I trusted them fully to realise my home design. They were great to deal with and I wouldn't do anything differently."
