Certain locations develop an architectural vernacular that is a direct response to the region. Take Queensland, for example. The typical Queenslander is set high to promote natural ventilation and employs deep verandas for shade both devices that serve to make living in tropical conditions more bearable.

Contemporary architects, taking advantage of modern materials and techniques, have been able to push the boundaries of the traditional Queenslander form, but the basic principles remain, says Paul Clout, principal of Paul Clout Design.

"Owners Lyn and Bruce Burns gave us free rein in terms of the design, so that left us the task of maximising the site, which fans out from the street to a 40m water frontage."

"The solution was a series of connected circular pavilions that spread out over the site, giving uninterrupted views, and capturing the prevailing breezes," says Clout.

Constructed from formed concrete, in places up to 300mm thick, the house has a stable thermal mass, which helps to keep it cool in the summer months.

Open-plan spaces promote natural ventilation. The main living area starts at the double-height entry, which flows into the kitchen and on into the dining area and then lounge. Bifold doors on both sides of this area allow for the whole space to be completely opened up, says Clout.

"Essentially, with the doors open, the living area becomes one great big covered veranda, which is perfect for enjoying the Queensland climate. All of the rooms have been designed with this in mind," says Clout.

Expansive glazing makes the most of the 180º views, while stainless steel railings withstand the salt air environment. Inside, a mix of timbers are augmented with tiles to create visual warmth.
