Remodeling requires a delicate balance between the expression of a homeowner's personal style and the careful blending of existing and new.

Treading this line was paramount to the creation of these kitchens by The Advance Design Studio, Ltd. Designer Christine Jurs says that the tall vaulted ceiling in the pale timber kitchen shown above presented a challenge.

"We took advantage of the 14ft ceilings by stacking maple cabinetry over eight feet high around the perimeter of the room," she says.

White Ash hardwood flooring, integrated with porcelain tile edging, complements these cabinets. Back-lit frosted glass doors on the upper cabinets create a warm glowing effect in the evenings.

Full-height black granite backsplashes add but do not compromise the Crema Bordeaux granite countertops, which have colors reminiscent of the Grand Canyon. Standard height Sipo Mahogany wood-top work surfaces are placed on either side of the island.

Cherry cabinetry is used in the darker kitchen to incorporate the client's extensive contemporary art collection, while maintaining the traditional style of the home.

"Oak builder-grade moldings were replaced with arched doorways, and casings finished in bright white."

In keeping with the contemporary nature of the artwork, designs were carefully chosen. These include a colorful glass backsplash that reflects light and picks up shade from the art pieces around the room, wall colors and subtle faux-finishes that provide a complementary backdrop for each piece of art, and white maple flooring and commercial grade stainless steel appliances that deliver the finishing touches.
