Creating a spectacle
The visually arresting exterior of the convention centre is the result of design and installation by Architectural Cladding Australia
To help visually integrate the fan shape of the Melbourne Convention Centre with the adjacent traditionally designed exhibition centre, its angular stealth shape has been offset with Anthra black Zinc. This maximises the impact on the Yarra River south bank skyline from across the river.
Academy Roofing won the contract to carry out the panel design, detailing, substructure, set-out and installation of this project, which is the largest VM Zinc® installation in the southern hemisphere.
"By varying the widths and the express joints across the large walls and cantilevered soffits, we have created a design that is more than just practical it adds interest to what could have been a dauntingly flat area of metal," says company director Karl Brown.
Academy Roofing has been involved in the supply and installation of roofing and cladding for a number of years. Five years ago, it identified a niche market for supplying and installing specialist metal architectural cladding such as VM Zinc, and has expanded its cladding division, Architectural Cladding Australia.
Pre-weathered VM Zinc is popular with architects because of its malleability, long life span, its ability to blend harmoniously with other materials and choice of colours, which includes blues, greens and reds. VM Zinc is also suitable for residential projects.
