Creating a spectacle
The number-one requirement of a convention centre is flexibility furnishings supplied by UCI fit this bill
The options for holding meetings, conventions and conferences in the new Melbourne Convention Centre are many and various. With 32 meeting rooms of differing sizes, a grand ballroom and the Plenary Hall, which can be divided into three self-contained, acoustically separate theatres, the choices for event planners are almost limitless.
Many of the furnishings and the numerous work-stations for these and the less-seen office areas of the centre were supplied and installed by UCI. Workstations were manufactured to specific design criteria provided by the project architects and designers, and had to be strongly constructed to cope with the demanding logistic requirements of such a large centre.
General manager of UCI Neil Ronaldson says the sheer size of the project and the number of trades working on the site in the same time slots, often out of normal working hours, meant UCI had to have a very specific and precise installation programme to ensure the project was completed on schedule.
"One of the reasons the company was able to meet the exacting project delivery schedule was because all the products were manufactured locally. This allowed us to be flexible in our co-ordination of the manufacture, delivery and installation of furnishings," he says.
UCI specialises in creating innovative workspaces using products that develop and improve the work environment and the lives of the people who use them.
To achieve this, the company draws on contacts with both international and local companies who manufacture workstations and associated furnishings.
