Creating a cosy ambience

Whether it's inside or in a courtyard, fireplaces from Fires by Design always draw in the crowds

The sight of open flames must press some primeval button a leftover from our caveman days because a flickering fire automatically seems to make a house feel cosy and welcoming.

The owners of this beachside property in Waiwera, north of Auckland, decided they wanted fireplaces both inside and in the courtyard of their new home, which was designed by architect David Ponting.

By working with the design team at Fires by Design the architect has ensured these fires look good and function well in both settings. An extra-large Warmington 1500EG gas fire designed for the open-plan living space has electronic ignition and remote controls. This allows easy operation of the fire and ensures the living area is kept warm and comfortable.

To take the chill off the air, and extend the use of the courtyard, the architect specified a Warmington 900 Nouveau woodburning outdoor fire. With a built-in log storage area close by, the courtyard is now a popular spot for entertaining. This fire can also be used for outdoor cooking.
