Contemporary feel enhances character cottage

A heritage inspired Arrowtown cottage has undergone a chic transformation thanks to Queenstown based Hub Design Interiors and a considered selection of tiles from The Tile Depot

This 20 year old cottage in Arrowtown has been a rental for several years and needed a complete refurbishment before its new owners could move in.

With an interior incongruous to the new owner’s needs, a bold transformation was in order.

The team at Hub Design Interiors specialise in comprehensive design and authentic interiors.

Being locals  to the Queenstown Lakes area they have an innate understanding of the area’s uniqueness and sense of place.

They were able to take this dated and dark interior and transform it into a fresh and bright contemporary home, while retaining its unique cottage character.

By altering and removing interior walls, the home was made to feel more spacious and light, with improved flow and storage throughout.

A clever blend of contemporary and modern-classic detailing has brought this home into the modern era.

In both the bathroom and ensuite, Blanc Heritage 500x1000mm tiles were selected from The Tile Depot.

The Blanc Heritage tile is in an elegant, timeless Italian porcelain that captures the essence of ancient sandstone with all the benefits of modern porcelain.

Its uneven rustic edges have a distinctly heritage appearance, in perfect keeping with this home’s character and location.

In addition, the light and neutral tile offers the permanence and strength of stone, while avoiding making the spaces seem heavy and dark.

The overall sense of spaciousness is further maximised by extending the tiling into the showers and full height floor to ceiling.

Laying these large format tiles horizontally also adds an illusion of width to these spaces.

Simple, clean lines, silver heritage-style tapware and ultra-modern features, such as led mirror lighting, combine perfectly in these spaces.

Bohemian feature tiles supplied by Hub Design add a further modern-classical element and also a textural component to the main bathroom.

At the heart of the home, the large, open, contemporary kitchen belies the cottage’s compact size and is a place for entertaining and family gathering.

Although a very contemporary design, classic and timeless colours and materiality have been chosen that will ensure this functional space remains relevant and on point for many years to come.

Herringbone Carrara Satin mosaics from The Tile Depot adorn the kitchen splashback.

This is another porcelain product that has the appearance of natural marble with all the benefits of a durable and non-porous porcelain.

It offers an ageless material aesthetic in a contemporary herringbone format.

Overall, thoughtful design decisions and careful attention to materiality have resulted in a home renovation that is both highly functional and extremely elegant.
