Commanding position
A curved cafe counter is a powerful and eye-catching feature in this kitchen designed by DeWitt Designer Kitchens
Creating a central spot that connects with the whole kitchen was part of the thinking behind transforming an old 1950s kitchen into a sharp, modern space.
Kitchen co-designer Elina Katsioula-Beall of DeWitt Designer Kitchens says one of the owners wanted a place in the kitchen where he could enjoy breakfast while watching the news on television.
"We designed the island to be the centerpiece of the kitchen. From the counter, the owner can see the kitchen, the rest of the island and the TV built into the wall cabinets," she says.
The dynamic triangular sides and mappa burl veneer of the counter define it strongly in the space and offset it against the sequence-matched maple finish on the rest of the cabinetry. Textural black-green granite countertops and toekicks add another contrast, and a sheer, sage glass backsplash tile accentuates the kitchen's horizontal lines.
