COMFORT FUEL
Hospitality designers are turning to feature gas fires as a way of introducing a warm and inviting ambience to restaurants, even at the start of an evening's business
The first half an hour or so can be crucial for any restaurateur: as well as attending to that night's menu, the manager has to dispel any hint of chilliness, and ensure the space is warm enough for early diners. It's a dilemma that many hospitality designers are addressing by specifying a feature gas fire for the dining area, says Escea's Nigel Bamford.
"At the beginning of the evening, the fire needs to be powerful enough to heat up the space," he says. "As the room fills up with diners, the room temperature goes up, so the fire needs to be adjustable."
The Escea IB850 glass-fronted fire emits 9kW of heat, making it suitable for use in large spaces. Once a venue is warm enough, the fire adjusts automatically to a comfortable 22°, says Bamford.
"Because the controls of our fires are wireless, the fire can be controlled safely from behind the bar or another staff-only area," he says. "During the warmer months, the fire can be adjusted to create a flame effect only, with minimal heat output."
