Crushed marble tiles offer designers the best of both worlds durability and performance combined with luxury underfoot

When the prospect of a new shopping mall generates the level of public anticipation that Sylvia Park did, form becomes just as important as function. First impressions make a difference to future customer loyalty, and when an area as large and exposed as the entire mall floor area is the space in question, it is vital to get the look just right.

Commercial tiling company The Tile People worked with Multiplex and SPA (NH Architecture and Jasmax) on the specification of Rover conglomerate marble tiles for the flooring surface.

Rover, which has been produced in Italy for 50 years, is a reconstituted product made from crushed marble fragments mixed with a polyester resin. The result is a strong, hard-wearing product with a luxurious, timeless quality.

The Tile People director Glenn Obery says the company imported the tiles and installed them throughout the general pedestrian area in the mall.

"Rover was chosen for its fantastic range of colours and its durability. The product has a proven track record for use in malls, airports and public spaces around the world. We are immensely pleased with the result and so is the client."

Recent projects undertaken by The Tile People have seen the company laying tiles in apartment buildings, university buildings, aquatic centres and vehicle showrooms. Obery says many large commercial jobs present challenges for flooring companies in that there are often many trades working in one area at a time.

"Having a full-time project manager at the Sylvia Park site throughout the job ensured the contract ran relatively smoothly."

The Tile People imports a large range of ceramics, natural and conglomerate stone and cladding products. The Rover product is available in a range of sizes and in slab for use as benchtops.
