Clean-lined comfort

An eye-catching frontage is always an important consideration for new home buyers. But for developers to provide on-going satisfaction to clients, the design has to go beyond aesthetics, to provide practical day-to-day advantages.

Hotondo Homes has recently released the Prairie series of homes that address both good looks and efficiency, says owner Barbara Phillips.

"The five houses in the series all offer clever design and light-filled, spacious interiors," she says. Two homes, the Sundance and the Arizona, feature here.

Behind the two-storey Arizona's open, balconied facade lies sweeping living areas, a study, home entertainment room, three bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, and the same number of bathrooms.

"Arizona's cafe-style kitchen opens onto a central alfresco dining courtyard, which is accessible from all living areas in fact, this is a feature of all these homes," says Phillips. "The single-storey Sundance is also well set up, right down to a five-star energy rating and a design that lets natural light flood the home from high-set windows."

There are also a myriad of custom options for the Prairie series, from stacked stone feature walls to bi-fold internal doors.

"Everything about these homes is market-driven. We see a need for, say, outdoor living rooms, and our designs reflect that," says Phillips. "Kitchens are always a focus for clients and ours offer upmarket finishes and Kleenmaid appliances."

Kleenmaid's 112L capacity oven, complete with a cooktop with six cooking zones, is a practical addition to a client's busy family life. A safe multi-glazed door, self-cleaning side panels and fully-programmable electronic timer all contribute to a hassle-free cooking experience.

Overhead, the commercial square-edge canopy rangehood is also from Kleenmaid. Features include three fan speeds, a stainless steel filter and a recirculating option.

Appliances contribute to the look of the kitchens, as well as their functionality. The stainless steel coffee machine, with black buttons and blue LED lights, is a good example. It is both hi-tech and easy to use. A GE Profile refrigerator also stands tall in terms of both function and design.

"This refrigerator has a 680L capacity, up-front, illuminated controls, a light-touch dispenser for cubed or crushed ice and chilled water. Inside, its various functions maximise use of space and keep everything at optimum temperatures."
