Clean and white
To give this predominantly white kitchen a crisp look, designer Cheryl Moynagh chose the new Smeg linear series of appliances with stainless steel detailing
Sometimes, a kitchen that stands out and makes a strong statement is the right choice for a home, while in other homes, a more understated look seems appropriate.
When kitchen designer Cheryl Moynagh moved into her new home, she knew the kitchen was in dire need of renovation.
"It was tiny and had no elbow room, so to create more space I sacrificed a bathroom and a separate laundry. These were turned into a scullery, and I then ran the main kitchen along one side of the open-plan dining and living room," she says.
"When you first walk into the living space, you don't realise it also contains the kitchen. The space available for the kitchen was limited, and because it is part of the indoor/outdoor entertaining areas of the house, I did not want guests to feel as if they were in the kitchen when we are entertaining. My new kitchen has a clean, contemporary appearance and blends into the overall space."
To create this crisp look, Moynagh has designed her kitchen using a predominance of white finishes a white CaesarStone benchtop, white lacquered cabinetry and a white glass splashback. As a contrast, the kitchen and scullery have stainless steel recessed drawer and door handles, and the toe-kick is aluminium.
To complete the new kitchen and scullery, Moynagh chose Smeg appliances.
"I have always loved Smeg appliances. I've had them in my two previous homes and have always enjoyed cooking with them. And the bonus for this kitchen was that the oven I wanted was available in white, so it blends in with the surrounding cabinetry," says Moynagh.
In addition, Smeg's range includes a semi-integrated dishwasher with a white front face and small stainless steel control panel, and a built-in Smeg Powerpack rangehood that fits discreetly into an overhead cupboard.
"Smeg's appliances have enabled me to create exactly the kitchen that I wanted," says the designer.
As part of the renovation, the laundry room was absorbed into the kitchen, and the appliances were relocated to the scullery. A Smeg front-loading washing machine and a separate dryer, both white, now form an unobtrusive tower in one corner.
"I chose these appliances because they are stackable and take up less space than a top-loading machine. And, like the dishwasher, they are quiet, which is important in an open-plan space," says Moynagh.
