Clean air policy

As well as being environmentally friendly, Rika's range of pellet fires, available from Harris Flame Technology, are contemporary in appearance

When we think about cold winter evenings, the concept of instant heat at the touch of a button combined with the attractive ambience of a natural flame is very appealing.

These pellet fires from Austrian company Rika are imported by Harris Flame Technology. Managing director Evan Harris says the fires are recognised and renowned for their clean-burning design. Because they use pre-packaged processed fuel, they have none of the problems of burning wet wood. Even needing to sweep the flue is a thing of the past.

"Pellet fires have one of the lowest emission rates of any wood burner available in New Zealand. They are designed to burn cleanly and efficiently without needing a convection fan, so they operate in almost complete silence," he says.

Rika pellet fires meet national clean air regulations, as well as stricter Christchurch and Nelson regulations and, unlike normal wood fires, they can be installed into new homes in Christchurch.

The pellets have a running cost of about 10 cents per kW hour, and they are convenient to use. Made from 100% compressed waste wood, they are completely dry and can be stored in a small space.
