Claiming the spotlight

Success has many spin-offs. Doubling in size over four years provided insurance company Lumley with an opportunity to raise its profile, a highly visible presence on the Auckland skyline

It's often the attention to detail that makes a commercial interior stand apart. For the Lumley head office, the design documentation and working drawings were undertaken by Gaze Commercial, working in conjunction with Australian concept designer Geyer.

Gaze Commercial also provided full project and cost-management services for both the hard and soft fit-outs. The work encompassed overall project co-ordination, including tendering, quality assurance, and the on-site construction management of all trades.

Gaze senior interior designer Terry Le Geyt says the original Australian specifications needed to be interpreted to suit New Zealand standards and the availability of materials.

"We had to advance the concept design to achieve the required look and finish a job that involved extensive documentation," he says. "We also had to adapt and modify existing products to create the right finish."

The customised design of the glass partitioning is a typical example, says Le Geyt. Recessed fittings make the glass appear to be frameless, enhancing the seamless, streamlined look of the interior.

Le Geyt says the internal staircase linking Floors 14 and 15 is a major design feature, helping to integrate departments and encouraging a more interactive work environment. Breakout areas and kitchenettes on each floor also create a more people-focused work environment.

The flexibility of the workspace is reflected in the open-plan layout and the design of touch-down areas. These are wired to enable brokers to connect laptops when they come into the office for short periods.
