Intelligent design and attention to detail are two factors that help make a kitchen stand apart from the competition. Equally important to a great space are originality and craftsmanship.

Combining all these elements is a task best left to the experts, as demonstrated in the kitchens featured on these pages. The Stimmel Consulting Group Inc, winner of several national design competitions, created the contemporary Malvern, Pennsylvania kitchen, shown above, for two cooks who enjoy working together.

Designer David Stimmel says several independent work zones were needed so the cooks could work in harmony. This was achieved with the installation of an angled island that can be approached from all sides. Plenty of counter space also provides additional work areas.

The kitchen features American cherry cabinetry from Crystal Cabinet Works, customized to suit the owners' requirements.

Stimmel says this space, which replaces an existing kitchen, involved hand cutting and re-using the original floor tiles to accommodate the new cabinetry layout. New stone mosaic tiles placed in the shadow of the cabinetry allowed the design team flexibility to move walls and change the existing plan.

The traditionally styled Chester County kitchen, shown on this page, was designed for the CEO of one of the nation's largest food corporations. Stimmel says the design needed to be functional, beautiful, and have a point of distinction, as the client regularly throws parties for large groups of people in the entertainment industry.

To achieve this, Stimmel used an Enkeboll fireplace mantel to provide a focal point over a kitchen window. For functionality, two Sub-Zero refrigerators and a 48-inch Viking range were specified.

The cabinetry, from Crystal Cabinet Works features the Country French Square design, inset with custom color. The countertops are Dakota Mahogany.
