Kitchens today are often an intrinsic part of open living spaces. What this means practically, is that the design and materials need to reflect and enhance the character of your home.

The kitchen featured on these pages was designed by Provincial Kitchens to replace a 1970s kitchen that was not in keeping with the aesthetic of the heritage home, says designer Dominique McAdam.

"The client liked the French Provincial style, and specifically requested features such as glass display areas, a large canopy and a butler's sink. It was also essential to create a practical kitchen to work and entertain in, particularly as it opens up onto a main family living area," she says.

The light-filled kitchen is finished in a soft off-white colour. High ceilings enhance the room's proportions, while a central island with an 80mm-thick merbau countertop, in a scalloped profile, is a visual highlight.

"We really wanted to maximise storage space and keep the appliances out of sight," says McAdam. "To achieve this, a large island and walk-in pantry were incorporated. Cabinets were built on the back of the island for extra storage. Oil and spice drawers, placed beside the cooktop for easy access, reduce clutter."

Provincial Kitchens designs in a number of styles besides French Provincial, including English Manor, Country, Georgian-style and contemporary. No matter what the style, the same principles are applied customer service, fine materials, master craftspeople and state-of-the-art componentry.
