It's strange how some color names seem to roll off the tongue perhaps it's a reflection of how well our senses respond to the moods and qualities they evoke.

In this kitchen, pale creamy yellows, soft sage greens and warm cocoa browns combine to create a space that is both light and welcoming, says designer Albert Carey, ASID, of Sonoma Kitchen and Bath.

"The homeowners had a sophisticated taste in color it's pleasing when people opt for definite colors, rather than going for the least offensive option," he says.

"They were also specific about what else they wanted lots of storage space and a look that was classic but not formal, and casual but not rustic."

The painted maple cabinetry features doors in a simple Shaker style the only ornament is an understated line of beading. Sea grass limestone, in a honed finish, tops the island and perimeter cabinetry.

"If limestone can be said to have softness and texture, then this stone does there's nothing harsh or reflective about it," says Carey.

Appliances, such as a commercial-style cooktop, Thermador oven, integrated microwave and large refrigerator, are placed to form an efficient work triangle.
