Character study
With its Aga range and furniture-style cabinetry, this new kitchen respects the traditional character of an 1870s house
In the 19th century, kitchens were small, cramped spaces, centered on a traditional wood-burning range. This kitchen revisits the past, but reinterprets it to provide a light-filled family living space well suited to a modern lifestyle.
Architect Robert MacNeille AIA says the kitchen is part of a major remodeling program undertaken by the new owners of the house, which was built in the 1870s.
"The house had been altered over the years, and the existing kitchen was probably built in the 1960s. It was a dark, very enclosed space. The owners wanted a more inviting, light kitchen."

To create such a space, an adjacent three-car garage was demolished and new windows added to bring in more light and to provide a view of the harbor.
The symmetrical kitchen was designed around a large Aga range, reminiscent of the traditional range that would have once dominated the space.
"We chose a furniture-style cabinetry design to complement the decorative detailing evident throughout the house," says MacNeille. "The painted cabinets and walnut island, which is like a table, also work with the owners' antique furniture."
Traditionally styled faucets, subway tiles, glass cabinets and a display shelf on the backsplash enhance the old-world feel.
Other key elements include a separate pantry, new breakfast area and a coffered ceiling designed around the concealed services to the rooms on the floor above.
