This kitchen revisits the past, but reinterprets it to provide a light-filled family living space well suited to a modern lifestyle.Architect Robert MacNeille AIA says the kitchen is part of a major remodeling program undertaken by the new owners of the house, which was built in the 1870s."The house had been altered over the years, and the existing kitchen was probably built in the 1960s. Overall view of the traditional kitchen area To create such a space, an adjacent three-car garage was demolished and new windows added to bring in more light and to provide a view of the harbor. The symmetrical kitchen was designed around a large Aga range, reminiscent of the traditional range that would have once dominated the space."We chose a furniture-style cabinetry design to complement the decorative detailing evident throughout the house," says MacNeille. "The painted cabinets and walnut island, which is like a table, also work with the owners' antique furniture."
