Most people add a second storey to their homes to increase their living space and add value to their property. Depending on the design, an addition can also add charm and character.

This 1950s fibro cottage has a lighter, spacious feel following the addition of a second storey by Cape Cod Australia, says managing director Alec Trostiansky.

The addition includes three large bedrooms, a spacious bathroom and a linen cupboard that opens onto a central landing. A staircase off the landing connects new spaces to the existing living area.

"By centrally locating the addition over the existing ground floor, the whole residence has a sense of symmetry and balance," says Trostiansky.

The remaining roof areas were covered with zincalume sheeting to match the addition, and a gambrel roof feature added to each level.

Pitching the new roof over the existing front verandah had the effect of reducing the scale and bulk of the front elevation, and defining the existing outdoor space and front entry to the residence.
