Carving a niche
Keeping alive the art of traditional English-style furniture making, Laurie's Furniture showcases intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail
Handmade period furniture never goes out of fashion. Rather, the time, skill and history invested in each handcrafted piece guarantee these antiques in the making will be around for future generations to enjoy.
For more than 20 years, master carver Stephen Laurie, owner of Laurie's Furniture, has specialised in the creation of English period investment furniture.
Working with solid woods such as mahogany and burr walnut veneers, each item is created using time-honoured carving techniques and intricate inlaid veneers. Much of the range, which comprises tables, chairs, cabinets, desks, bookcases and bedroom furniture, takes its cues from the Chippendale, Sheraton and Victorian furniture styles.
"The 18th century was the golden age of English furniture design," says Stephen Laurie. "Many of my designs were collected on an extensive tour of 60 to 70 of Great Britain's finest homes, castles and museums. I also worked with one of England's most prominent master carvers to produce architectural decoration for stately homes and churches throughout Great Britain."
With two ranges on offer the Laurie Collection and the recently acquired EW Rich Furniture Collection Laurie's Furniture has one of the largest ranges of high-quality furniture handmade in New Zealand.
