Glazing plays a significant role in the design of most contemporary homes, and is often used to bring visual balance to a design. This house, designed by Wellington architects Novak & Middleton, is a good example. Solid walls are countered by floating elements, which include a gull-wing roof that sits above a narrow band of windows.Cantilevering part of the house over a lake, and glazing the exterior walls, also makes the structure appear to defy gravity, says architect Richard Middleton. Pool and patio area in front of house with large windows and sliding glass doors. To complement the contemporary design, Rylock low-maintenance, powdercoated aluminium joinery in Silver Star was specified. Supplied by Rylock Kapiti, the joinery is part of the company's residential suite. For this project, which features expansive glass walls, green Panasap double glazing was specified. This provides thermal insulation, helping to keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter. As well as fixed glazing, awning windows and large sliding doors, there are sliding stacker doors opening to a terrace and pool. The band of high windows beneath the roof is repeated on several internal walls, adding a light, spacious feel to the interior. Exterior patio area of house with pool, extensive glazing, outdoor furniture and shade sail cloth. Glazing also encloses a walkway between two main wings of the house, ensuring the owners can simultaneously enjoy the terrace and the semi-rural views. For more details, contact Rylock Kapiti 2000 Ltd, phone (04) 293 6874.
