A vibrant daub of turquoise on a living room wall might draw the eye for a moment but what if that same colorful splash connects with an indigo sunset stretched out across the sky? The use of color can be a strong ally in a design, linking disparate elements to powerful effect.

This holiday house nestled on the Caribbean island of St Martin was created by New York designer Geoffrey Bradfield. The choice of style was to be Bradfield's own; however the owners had requested the residence be refined yet casual a place suitable for bare feet or sandals. The family also loved Moroccan architecture and hoped to see that reflected in the design.

In response, Bradfield designed the retreat with a combination of modern, Neoclassical and exotic features. A glistening infinity-edge pool brings a square of blue to the heart of the estate.

Overall, the color palette was inspired by the home's panoramic outlooks, says Bradfield.

"These comprise varying greens from seafoam to aqua and deep turquoise. I contrasted the aquatic shades with a pungent aubergine, to exaggerate contrasts. All these strong colors are accents within a soft-toned, monochromatic shell. The ultimate goal here was serenity to capture the tranquility of the natural setting."

However, a departure from this approach is seen in the Moroccan room, where the decor is a nod to the traditional bhou, or tent, with stripes on the Venetian plaster walls and ceiling.

"In this fantasy room, traditional horseshoe arches frame mirrors reflecting scenic vistas and light," says Bradfield. An important element is the mosaic floor, with patterns and hues that evoke Berber carpet motifs. It's like a magic carpet, making you feel as though you have been transported direct to Morocco."

Of course, the local environment has its own share of amazing color cues in the living areas, canvases depicting bright butterflies and birds also echo the vibrancy of the Caribbean setting.
