Building history
Land reclamation, bold architecture and innovative construction methods have made the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre an iconic building with high public exposure
Fabrication and erection of the complex steel structure for the centre and exhibition hall was carried out by a joint venture between Gold Coast-based DA Manufacturing Company and Brisbane-based Gay Constructions. DA Manufacturing also fabricated and erected the 427m-long curved pedestrian bridge under a separate contract.
The steelwork for the main roof comprised a grid of primary and secondary trusses spanning 75m, some over 7m in depth, making it a challenging and complicated project. The complex roof shape was created using structural steel framing fixed to the primary roof. It was this innovation which won the project a place in the ASI Steel Awards.
The steelwork involved extremely complex geometry and required 3D computer modelling to create the workshop drawings. The shape dictated that very few pieces of steel were similar and required a complex bracket system to support the more than 40km of cold rolled purlins and girts required to hold the sheeting.
