Finding the appropriate building designer for your project may seem like a daunting prospect, but it needn't be. As you would with finding any professional, the best way to proceed is by compiling a comprehensive list of those best suited to the task ahead.

Since 1950, the American Institute of Building Design (AIBD) has set the standard for building designers, says president Dan Sater.

"AIBD provides members with professional and educational resources, has developed nationwide design standards, and compiled an extensive list of qualified design professionals and a free publication A Guide to Residential Design Specialists' for consumers."

Through the AIBD website, consumers can post information free of charge about upcoming projects, with a view to receiving professional consultation and assistance.

"Our eLeads service matches consumers with residential industry professionals, as well as acting as a portal for information concerning products and services," says Sater.

The easily navigable website allows visitors to search for building designers either at a state level or by zip code, says Sater.

"Our goal is to promote public awareness of the building design profession through the website, our Design Lines publication and our American Residential Design Awards for the benefit of our members and the public."
