From the Children’s Cancer Institute: To mark International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in 2017, Children’s Cancer Institute, McDonald Jones Homes and Walker Corporation have joined forces to undertake an extraordinary challenge - building a two storey house in just 28 days.

Everything we need to deliver this fully-furnished, luxury four bedroom home is being donated. This includes the selfless volunteers who donate their time and skill to build it. “The House Built with Love” will then be auctioned off, with all proceeds from the sale going directly to Children’s Cancer Institute’s vital research.

Thursday the 14th of September marks the day when the whole house will be fully furnished in just one day. Jill Clements, Freedom’s Interior Designer and McDonald Jones Homes MyChoice Designers will also be on site installing all the soft and hard furnishings which have been generously donated. All appliances have generously been donated by Winning Appliances and Fisher & Paykel.

“The style we've used has a relaxed but luxurious contemporary feel. We've introduced some of this season’s colours and textures which include rich greens, navy and burnished brass. We've layered Velvets and linens, alongside some interesting more raw textures. Our overall design caters for a family and everyday comfort.”

This is my third Build for a Cure and it is always the highlight of my year, it gives me an opportunity to use my creativity and design skills to help towards saving lives and for that I feel honoured and humble.” Jill Clements - Senior Interior Decorator from Freedom.About Children’s Cancer InstituteOriginally founded by two Fathers of children with cancer in 1976, Children’s Cancer Institute is the only independent medical research institute in Australia wholly dedicated to research into the causes, prevention and cure of childhood cancer. Forty years on, our vision remains unchanged – to save the lives of all children with cancer and to eliminate their suffering. The Institute has grown to now employ more than 200 researchers, operational staff and students, and has established a national and international reputation for scientific excellence.

Our focus is on translational research, and we have an integrated team of laboratory researchers and clinician scientists who work together in partnership to discover new treatments which can be progressed from the lab bench to the beds of children on wards in our hospitals as quickly as possible. These new treatments are specifically targeting childhood cancers, so we can develop safer and more effective drugs and drug combinations that will minimise side-effects and ultimately give children with cancer the best chance of a cure with the highest possible quality of life.

We are currently leading the establishment of the Zero Childhood Cancer national child cancer personalised medicine program for children with the most aggressive cancers, in partnership with the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network. This program will revolutionise the way treatment decisions are made, with the aim of improving survivorship for those children at highest risk of treatment failure from their disease.
