A picture of curvaceous steel and vinyl, the Cloud on Queens Wharf is aptly named. Initially called Party Central, the events venue includes a two-tier, light and airy VIP entertainment area.

Airpro Mechanical Services was asked to design and build air conditioning to fit this VIP space, which caters for up to 600 people and takes up around 25% of the venue. No plant was to be visible it all had to fit within the curved structure, posing a major challenge in terms of space. The limited amount of power was another hurdle.

Airpro's design response was to mount two Temperzone 180kW PA4800 rooftop packaged units in the plant room. To maximise efficiency and prevent condenser air being drawn into the plant room, Temperzone came up with the solution of discharging the unwanted air through the floor of the package unit and via holes waterblasted in the concrete floor of the wharf. EC motor-driven plug fans were set under each unit to provide sufficient pressure to negotiate the discharge path down through the wharf.

The structure is double skinned so Airpro designed a ducting system to go between the skin and thread through the curved trusses.

Sitting near the Cloud during the Rugby World Cup, the Giant Rugby Ball (GRB) housed an audiovisual display showcasing New Zealand to up to 200 visitors at a time. Show Light & Power installed a packaged air system, specified by K Simpson Ltd. As the GRB is pressurised, balancing air coming in and out of the venue was critical. A Temperzone OPA 333 packaged heat pump unit provided the solution.
