For centuries, brass and bronze have been used to embellish buildings. The metals are just as much in demand today, as these projects illustrate

Architects and designers are always looking to create a point of difference, and it's often just as much about the innovative use of materials as it is about the design.

The projects featured on these pages showcase coloured metal, brass and bronze walls and cladding fabricated by Craft Metals and installed by Architectural Roofing & Wall Cladding (ARC).

ARC general manager Greg Cunningham says that while these projects highlight new ways of using coloured metals, the concept is not new the decorative value of brass and bronze has been recognised for many centuries.

"The popularity of these metals is due to their colour and patina, which ranges from gold to green and all shades of brown," he says.

Cunningham says the patina that is acquired over time is often replicated by artists and metal workers looking to simulate antiquity in newly made objects. This is achieved by applying chemicals to the surface of the brass, copper or bronze to give the metal an aged appearance.

"ARC has used this process to create internal feature facades in refurbishment projects, such as office foyers and hotels," he says. "We have also applied the concept to feature walls and fireplace surrounds in residential projects. The panels can be flat or curved, and edged with brass extrusions for a more refined finish."
